§ IBiography
Annia Galeria Faustina Maior (c. 100–140/141) — sister of Marcus's father (Marcus Annius Verus the Younger) and wife of Antoninus Pius. She died early in her husband's reign (140/141) and was deified by the Senate; in her honour Antoninus raised a temple in the Roman Forum (after his own death in 161 the dedication was extended to both — Templum Antonini et Faustinae). Her daughter Faustina the Younger became Marcus's wife.
§ IIMentions in Marcus
She appears as an exemplum of the transience of even the imperial house, not as a philosophically weighty figure:
- 08-25 — "Antoninus buried Faustina, then he too was buried": a pair in the roll-call of the dead.
- 01-02 — biographical background: sister of Marcus's father, wife of Antoninus Pius (footnote).
