Genre and place in the book. A cosmological thesis on the rational coherence of all things — almost the coda of the book's "cosmic" thread (04-40, 04-42, 04-43). Against the picture of blind mechanism: the causal order is not forced but rational and kindred.
Not an enumeration but a connection. A sharp contrast: not a καταρίθμησις — an "enumeration" of disjointed things held together only by a forced sequence (κατηναγκασμένον, "necessitated") — but a συνάφεια εὔλογος, a "rational connection." This is DOGMAprovidence: the world-order is governed by mind, not by blind necessity (cf. the disjunction "providence or atoms," 04-27).
Co-ordination and kinship. συντέτακται συνηρμοσμένως τὰ ὄντα — existing things are "fitted together" into a harmony; τὰ γινόμενα display no bare διαδοχή (succession) but a θαυμαστὴ οἰκειότης — a "wonderful kinship." This is the DOGMAunity of the cosmos / sympatheia: all is interconnected (cf. 04-40; Med. 6.38; 7.9).
Two doctrines, not one. The passage holds both facets that the cards deliberately keep apart: rationality-and-purpose (DOGMAprovidence) and ontological interconnection (DOGMAunity-of-cosmos). Both are asserted here: "a rational connection" (εὔλογος, not blind necessity) + "harmonious co-ordination and kinship."
Why the terms are empty. οἰκειότης (the kinship of events) is not οἰκείωσις (the ethical "appropriation," the concentric circles; a different lexeme and a different sense); εὔλογος ("well-reasoned") is not λόγος (a derivative, as εὐλογιστία ≠ λόγος). Strictly, there is nothing to tag.
The disciplines. The principal one is desire: to be reconciled to a rationally ordered world — since all is connected and rational, accept your place in it. The secondary is assent: the right judgement — the connection is rational, not blind necessity.
The exercise. EXERCISEContemplation of nature: the perception of the rational co-ordination of the Whole — physics as therapy (the facet of "rational order," beside change in 04-36, unity in 04-40, flux in 04-43).
Parallels. A rational connection, not blind necessity — 04-27; 04-10 (cf. DOGMAprovidence). Harmonious co-ordination, sympatheia — 04-40; Med. 6.38; 7.9 (cf. DOGMAunity-of-cosmos). The contemplation of the rational order — 04-43; 04-36 (cf. EXERCISEcontemplation-of-nature).
