MED. 12.32Discipline of desire
George Long · 1862EN · Long

EXERCISEHow small a part of the boundless and unfathomable time is assigned to every man, for it is very soon swallowed up in the eternal! And how small a part of the whole substance, and how small a part of the universal TERMsoul; and on what a small clod of the whole earth thou creepest. Reflecting on all this, consider nothing to be great, except to act as thy TERMnature leads thee, DOGMAand to endure that which the common nature brings.

Leopold · Teubner 1908
Commentary

Four questions with a single word. Πόστον is "how-manieth, what fraction" — a rare and exact word, asking about position in a series rather than size in general. It is repeated four times, and the measure changes each time: time, substance, soul, earth. Cf. 12.7, where the same magnitudes are listed without a question.

ἀχανής — the same word as in 12.7. τοῦ ἀπείρου καὶ ἀχανοῦς αἰῶνος — "of the boundless and gaping age"; 12.7 had the noun ἀχάνεια, here it is the adjective. Between them stands 9.32 with the same root. The image is one: not infinity as an abstraction but the open jaw of time.

A word that lowers a man as far as he will go. ἐν πόστῳ βωλαρίῳἕρπεις; — "on what little clod are you crawling?" Βωλάριον is a diminutive of βῶλος, "a lump, a clod": not "a patch of earth" but a crumb of it. And the verb ἕρπω is used of reptiles and worms. Rogovin keeps it ("we crawl"); Long softens it to "creepest."

And a conclusion that cancels all the preceding humiliation. μηδὲν μέγα φαντάζου ἢ τό — "imagine nothing to be great except this." And "this" is divided in two along the two natures: DOGMAto act as your DOGMAownDOGMA φύσις leads, to undergo as the DOGMAcommonDOGMA one brings. Action is referred to the individual nature, undergoing to the universal; and the greatness withdrawn from everything else is given over entire to that single distinction. The governing discipline is desire, the sustaining one assent.
