MED. 9.32Discipline of assent
George Long · 1862EN · Long

Thou canst remove out of the way many useless things among those which disturb thee, TERMfor they lie entirely in thy opinion; and thou wilt then gain for thyself ample space by EXERCISEcomprehending the whole universe in thy mind, and by contemplating the eternity of time, and observing the TERMrapid change of every several thing, how short is the time from birth to dissolution, and the illimitable time before birth as well as the equally boundless time after dissolution.

Leopold · Teubner 1908
Commentary

Room from a change of scale. The advice comes in two beats. First, a therapy of judgement: "you can remove much of the superfluous (περισσά) that troubles you — it TERMlies wholly in your opinion" (cf. 9.13 — trouble is "within, in the ὑπολήψεις"; DOGMAthe trouble is in the judgement, not the thing). Second, how to remove it: to gain "ample room" (εὐρυχωρία) by EXERCISEtaking in with the mind the whole cosmos and all eternity — the spatial-and-temporal view from above.

The swiftness of change. The addition: the TERM"rapid change" (ταχεῖα μεταβολή) of each particular thing — brief the span from birth to dissolution, and before and after, an abyss (ἀχανές, ἄπειρον). Against eternity the "troubling" shrinks to nothing. EXERCISEThe contemplation of nature here works as a clearing of space in the soul. The governing discipline is assent.
