Two disciplines — one formula. A compact summary (cf. 9.6): toward what comes "from the external cause" (ἐκτὸς αἰτία) — DOGMAἀταραξία, freedom from disturbance (the discipline of desire: the external is not up to me, there is nothing to murmur at); toward what is done "by my own cause" (ἐκ σοῦ αἰτία) — TERMδικαιότης, justice (the discipline of action: for my own acts I answer). The line falls exactly along the DOGMAup-to-us and not-up-to-us.

Impulse closing on the common. The clarification (τουτέστιν): TERMὁρμή and πρᾶξις "terminating in the TERMsocial act itself" — in the social deed as their end, since this is TERMκατὰ φύσιν for a rational-social being. The act is aimed not at a result-in-the-external but at the quality of the doing (just, social), which is what makes it invulnerable to fortune. The governing discipline is action.
