MED. 6.56Discipline of desire
Commentary

The thinning ranks of one's peers. A brief EXERCISEmemory of death in a personal key: how many of those who entered the world together with me (μεθ’ ὧν εἰσῆλθον) have already gone out of it (ἀπεληλύθασιν). Death is neither an abstraction nor the lot of "others": it has already thinned one's own generation. The governing discipline is desire.

Entrance and exit. The image of life as an entrance (εἴσοδος) and a departure (ἔξοδος) is common in Marcus: birth and death are the gates of one and the same natural process. Seeing how many "companions in entering" have already passed back through the gate, one accepts one's own near departure more easily — as a matter of turn, not of injustice.

Parallels. The EXERCISEmemory of death — 06-47 (the roll-call of the dead); catalogues of the departed — 04-48 (whole courts, cities); Med. 4.50 (the long-lived and the early-gone — all the same); 7.6 (how quickly all is forgotten); 8.31 (the court of Augustus — all extinct).
