A re-weighting of first place. One word of concession, and four that cancel it: another may be "more skilled at wrestling" (καββαλικώτερος — from καταβάλλω, "to throw down"; the wrestling image Marcus returns to at 7.61: life is more like wrestling than dancing) — but not TERMmore social (κοινωνικώτερος), not more modest, not "more orderly (εὐτακτότερος) in what happens," not more kindly toward the neighbours' faults. The move is a revaluation of the scale: the rival wins in what is indifferent (strength, skill, status) but loses in the one thing that is good — in virtue.
A list of four. These qualities in particular are named for a reason: κοινωνικόν (sociability — the foundation of ethics), αἰδώς (modesty-conscience), εὐταξία "in what happens" (good order before fate), εὐμένεια toward others' faults (παροράματα — "oversights"; cf. 7.22, 7.26). It is a compact map of the three disciplines: bearing toward people, toward oneself, toward fate. The only arena worth competing in is this one — where the prizes are not taken away and do not depend on another's weakness. The strict term κοινωνικός is in the text (κοινωνικώτερος). The discipline is action.
