Coiling inward. συνειλοῦ is a verb of rolling up, gathering into a coil: not "leave the world" but "collect yourself out of dispersal" — the compact formula of the EXERCISEinner retreat of 4.3, where Marcus laughs at the craving for country refuges: "at any hour you can retreat into yourself." Here the same doctrine is compressed into three words and grounded not in fatigue but in constitution: such is the TERMnature of the TERMrational ruling part — to be content with itself.

Autarky with a condition. The precision of the formula lies in the participle: the ruling part is content with itself δικαιοπραγοῦντι — "doing what is just." The self-sufficiency is not unconditional: it belongs not to repose but to just action; seclusion without δικαιοπραγία is not a citadel but a burrow. Hence the order of causes: first the just deed, and from it — "by that very fact" (παρ’ αὐτὸ τοῦτο) — TERMgalēnē, the soul's dead calm (a sea metaphor: still water after the storm; see 5.2). Peace is not the goal but the wake of virtue — a compressed version of the doctrine DOGMAἀρετὴ αὐτάρκης: for εὐδαιμονία one's own right act suffices, and nothing else is required. Cf. 7.59 ("dig within: within is the spring of good, and it can always well up, if you always dig") and 8.48 (the mind free of passions is an ἀκρόπολις). The governing discipline is desire (self-sufficiency, imperturbability); the sustaining one, action (δικαιοπραγεῖν as the condition).
